When Change Is Not Enough: The Seven Steps to Revolution

I take the lessons of history very seriously and I believe that those who DO learn from history are NOT doomed to repeat it.

But we also need to consider the effects of current conditions that that were not present in the historical past:

In the "scary" column we have: - Television - 9 Billion humans on the Earth - Nuclear weapons - Massive dependency on fossil fuels

In the "hopeful" column we find: - Digital information technologies (doing more with less) - The Internet - Widespread emancipation of women in the northern hemisphere. - "global" conciousness (think "whole earth" photographs from space).

One could say that past generations had to contend with similar innovations and challenges. In the long view, television may be no more revolutionary than the printing press.

Monday wild card

And so, I'm making a plea to all of you to help me out with material. Apart from not being as smart, talented, or handsome as Dave (above), I have two other key disadvantages:

I live and work in Spokane, and don't get over to North Idaho much. So I don't have much of a handle (pun intended) on the local political scene. I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier.

I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post.

And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy.

Hominy & Hash

His son, actor Charlie Sheen, is really Carlos Irwin Estevez while brother, actor Emelio Estevez, stayed true to the Spanish side of his roots and didn't change his name.

As with many marriages crossing ethnic lines, Martin Sheen's mother was Irish. He is quoted as saying: "I love being Spanish as much as I love being Irish - and I really love being Irish."

Comedian Danny Thomas, Marlo Thomas' late dad, was really Muzyad Yakhoob. Would he have made it on the Boards at Las Vegas with that spelled out on the marquee along with Jerry Lewis (Joseph Levitch), Joey Bishop (Joseph Abraham Gottlieb), Jerry Vale ( Genaro Vitaliano).

This is not to suggest anyone is ashamed of their name or their heritage; not so. The big desire was to make it, to succeed in their endeavors, and, if it appeared that public opinion suggested reasons to make it simpler in some unobjectionable way, then "you do what you have to do." Today, Thomas Mapother IV answers to the name of Tom Cruise.

Clinton under pressure to quit

We have to have a positive campaign after Tuesday," Gov Richardson, who abandoned his own White House bid in January, said on CBS News.

"Whoever has the most delegates after Tuesday, a clear lead, should be in my judgment the nominee."

The latest count of nominating delegates by website RealClearPolitics shows Senator Obama leading by 1389 to Senator Clinton's 1279, with the freshman senator pulling into the lead after 11 nominating wins in a row.

A total of 2025 delegates is needed for victory at the Democrats' August nominating convention in Denver.

Tuesday's votes look unlikely to change that picture much, given that Democratic primaries award delegates on a proportional basis.

A new poll by Ohio's Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper found Senator Clinton slightly ahead in the economically struggling state, by 47-43 per cent.

The White House is trying to scare Americans to give total control to one branch of government," Boyda said in an interview from Washington. "The Republicans don't have the guts to stand up to the president. They're afraid of some 30-second ad that could be run against them."

Here's Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida:

When I got elected," Rep. Mahoney said last week, "I took an oath to defend the Constitution. If some of these companies gave information to the government without the government getting a warrant, that was unconstitutional.

"You know what (the companies) said? They said I should vote for the immunity because it's patriotic. That's how weak the argument is."

Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Rep. Mike Arcuri of NY have also made strong and smart statements.

Acts of Fortitude and Integrity of Impeachment

They are succeeding in this before America has reached this achievement. As far as Impeaching Mushareff, it is not seen yet, but the gloves are off when it comes to Bush and his Administration for supporting oppression in Pakistan instead of supporting Democracy.

America should be following similar principles. Bush and Cheney and the CIA are not going to like it at first, but they need to take the medicine, because of their truly mistaken deeds. Granted they took out Saddam, but they must be held accountable for the innocent children and families they had a hand in killing. They will blame Saddam, but it was not a Saddam bomb that killed those innocent people in Iraq. It was American made, and delivered. It was American weapons that originally armed Saddam, and American policies that incited the region into volatility.

Badman: 'Our best chance ever'

Sidelined Mark Badman believes Chippenham Town have their best ever chance of promotion as they head into the final ten games.

The midfielder is out after a sinus operation last week and won't be available until the middle of March but he still confident, ahead of tomorrow's home clash with Rugby, he and his teammates will clinch promotion.

"Nerves play a part but we have got a good enough squad to get through them and we have got an experienced management team," he said.

"They will show the lads what to do and I believe it's the best chance we've ever had and we have to grab it."

The 28-year-old will also be using previous play-off woe to inspire him after defeats to Bedford and Hednesford Town during his time at Hardenhuish Park.
