The site was created after a group concerned parents asked the News Sentinel to help create an ongoing public forum to discuss school issues. It was honored on Monday with a national award from the Newspaper Association of America as an innovate effort in user participation. That means that an idea pioneered here in Knoxville by group parents that said "let's do something" is being held up as a model for other communities across the country. But to truly have an impact, you need to get involved, or to put it bluntly: Parents, do you homework. Below is what people are talking about at School Matters. Staying safe with portable generator
But you can be snug and safe with your generator, as long as you follow the rules. First, let's look at the dangers. Carbon monoxide:Œ The gasoline-powered motor that runs a generator is an internal combustion engine, much like a miniature automobile engine. Like a car engine, the generator motor gives off carbon monoxide -- a deadly, colorless, odorless gas. If you start to feel sick or dizzy while using a generator, get some fresh air immediately. Never run a generator indoors. Keep it outside, away from doors, windows and vents -- both yours and your neighbor's. Experts advise that you also avoid running the generator in a garage -- even with the door open. Likewise, avoid placing your running generator in a basement, crawl space or any enclosed area.
Civil War relics collector killed in Richmond-area blast
RICHMOND, Va. - Authorities remained on the scene Tuesday of a Chesterfield County neighborhood where munitions exploded and killed a homeowner who sold Civil War relics. Chesterfield County Police said neighbors reported the explosion Monday afternoon after hearing the blast and then finding the victim fatally injured in his backyard near a detached garage. Police identified the victim Tuesday as Samuel H. White, 53. .
