| Leeds weather Storm to claim world crown
A brief flurry of fisticuffs broke up a game of attrition where iron defence ruled, a handful of players from both sides racking up 30-plus tackles and another handful leaving the pitch injured. Leeds forward Carl Ablett then had a try ruled out after a slight knock-on chasing a Burrow chip over a flat Storm defence. With 15 minutes to play, Sinfield nailed a 30-metre field goal to stretch Leeds' lead to seven. Melbourne, who beat St Helens in the 2000 Challenge, had a late effort by Will Chambers disallowed after the winger stepped into touch when scoring to ensure there would be no repeat of their previous win. Sound Off! (Feb. 24)
This is to the city manager and the mayor: Why are you allowing high school children to ride with police officers? I thought their job was hard enough and dangerous. Plus, who's going to pay for one of these children if one of them happens to get hurt? It looks like some procedures need to be reevaluated with the sheriff's department. In my department, we were always taught to secure our weapon and not leave it in our car. So now if other countries decapitate our prisoners, that makes it OK for us to waterboard them? I don't understand your reasoning. Isn't the whole point that the United States is above that sort of thing? Aren't we supposed to be showing countries that we can't treat people that way? We all know that the Iraq war's being started over oil, and yet they threw in also that we were fighting against the atrocities that Saddam Hussein forced upon his people.
Capitol Police officer admits setting fires
Capitol Police department since January 2003. The fires occurred on at least seven days between late September and early November and initially were a puzzle for Capitol police, since some were in locations not yet open to the public for the day. In preparing their case, prosecutors used information from a police colleague and a civilian witness to charge Emory with an incident on November 2. According to court documents, she had just left a restroom where burned toilet paper had been found. The only other visitor that morning told police she had earlier used the same stall, and there was no burned paper. Video surveillance from hallway and other cameras was also part of the case, according to police officials and court documents.
The race heats up, and the slime meter jumps
The blogs are full of talk-radio wannabes. By comparison - and again, it's unscientific - Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose full name might not pack the partisan wallop it did from critics in the early '90s, appeared in blogs about 22,000 times last September and October, and nearly 109,000 times in January and February, a tamer, five-fold increase. The phrase "Hillary Clinton," meanwhile, appeared about 77,000 times during the two months last fall and 443,000 times this winter, a similar, six-fold increase. Beyond games with names, you could divine through the blogs the growing fervor of the campaign on the eve of Tuesday's pivotal Democratic primaries in Texas and Ohio. Bloggers critical of Obama seemed to be attacking him with more zeal than his actual opponent, who inexplicably played nice on the final question of the debate in Cleveland Tuesday, when the moderator, Brian Williams, practically begged her to describe the biggest weakness of her opponent.
Calming I-35W congestion
Last fall, Minneapolis was one of five cities selected to receive a $133 million federal grant under an Urban Partnership Agreement (UPA) for tolls, transit, technology and telecommuting on I-35W. The project would affect all of 35W from Downtown Minneapolis to the southern tip of Burnsville. New park- and-ride stations would pop up in the suburbs, toll lanes would be built on 35W from Richfield to Downtown, and Marquette and 2nd Avenues — two important Downtown corridors — would be completely reconstructed. In order to get the grant, however, the state must provide $55 million in matching funds by the end of this year’s legislative session, bringing the total budget to almost $190 Full Article .
